GUIDED BY VOICES – CRAWLSPACE OF THE PANTHEON
For a band releasing album number 43 (or 44, depending how you count it), Guided by Voices somehow still sound hungry with Crawlspace of the Pantheon. Robert Pollard is not someone who’s known for his ability to edit and set things in a drawer, whatever is on his mind gets turned into a song and that sound usually gets released. Luckily for Pollard, he’s usually got a gem or two on every album. The songs are (as per usual) compact, hooky, and a little scrappy. Or as Pollard told Rolling Stone magazine, “tight and energetic.” It’s a fun ride every time and I’ll be back for album number 44 (or 45).

PAUL McCARTNEY – THE BOYS OF DUNGEON LANE
The Boys of Dungeon Lane is a lyric from an early demo off Paul McCartney‘s 1993 album, Off the Ground. Over a decade later he’s still reminiscing about those days of his wild youth. So, yes, this is a deeply personal album. It’s rooted in those childhood memories of Liverpool (if you are a Beatles nerd like me and made the pilgrimage, you probably also noticed that there’s not much to do in the town). While he’s waxing about the streets and friendships, he brings in some friends to help with Ringo Starr, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), and Sharleen Spiteri (Texas), for extra warmth on “Home to Us.”
