Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish has formed a new supergroup, Howl Owl Howl, with R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills and former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman (our very own host of Gorman in the Morning). Their debut song, “My Cologne,” is set to release on October 31, followed by their first tour starting November 3 in Indianapolis. The band’s music is described as a blend of roots rock and alternative flair, born from informal jam sessions that began in 2021.
The members are excited about the group’s dynamic, with Rucker noting that the new music is unlike anything he’s done before. The band plans to play a mix of their new original songs, along with covers from their respective former bands—R.E.M., the Black Crowes, and Hootie and the Blowfish. After performing R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” in concert over the years, Hootie and the Blowfish recording a studio version of the song for the 2020 reissue of their 2019 album Imperfect Circle.
