The non-profit, Flags for Fort Snelling, honored every headstone last Memorial Day at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with a flag. This was the first time in over three decades that a flag was placed at the nearly 200,000 headstones to honor the heroes laid to rest there; a tradition that was lost due to the cost and manpower it takes to place the nearly 200,000 flags.
Flags for Fort Snelling is raising money to purchase new, patent-pending sustainable flags that will last for decades, instead of the 1-2 uses currently gotten out of the disposable kind. Tens of thousands of flags were lost last year due to the weather and being mishandled during the flag collection. Of course, the new flags come at a much higher cost!
